Guide: Class 4 shingles

Class 4 shingles: what they cost and whether they pay back.

In a hail corridor like west Houston, the shingle you choose matters as much as who installs it. Here is how impact-resistant shingles work and how to decide.

Updated

What "Class 4" means

Impact resistance for roofing is commonly rated under the UL 2218 standard, which drops steel balls of increasing size onto the shingle. Class 4 is the top rating: the sample survives a 2-inch steel ball without cracking.

Class 4 shingles typically use a rubberized (SBS-modified) asphalt or reinforced mat so they flex on impact instead of fracturing. They are not hail-proof; very large hail can still damage them.

What the upgrade costs

In our approved 2026 pricing, impact-resistant shingles add $55 per square (100 sq ft of roof) over standard architectural shingles. On a typical 20–35 square home in Katy or Fulshear, that is roughly $1,100–$1,900.

How the Texas insurance discount works

Texas insurers must offer a premium discount on homeowners policies for roofs that meet impact-resistance standards. The size of the discount varies by insurer and policy, so get the figure from your agent before you decide.

Insurers typically ask for proof: the product name, its Class 4 rating, and installation documentation. Keep the invoice and product labels from the job.

To compare, multiply your annual discount by the years you expect to stay in the home and set it against the upgrade cost. Fewer hail claims and less roof downtime are benefits on top of that.

Class 4 shingle questions

Do Class 4 shingles look different?

No. Most are architectural shingles in the same colors and profiles as standard lines, so they suit HOA requirements just as easily.

Are Class 4 shingles worth it in Katy and Fulshear?

For many homeowners here, yes, because hail is frequent and the insurance discount offsets part of the cost. The math depends on your insurer's discount and how long you plan to stay.

Will insurance pay for a Class 4 upgrade after hail?

Usually a claim pays to replace what you had. Upgrading to Class 4 is normally your cost for the difference. Ask your insurer how it handles upgrades.
